Playing croquet, as in other sports, necessarily involves a lot of rules.  These can be found in the WCF Rules of Golf Croquet with additional rules in the SWCC By-laws.

Below are listed further etiquettes that we as a club have adopted but which some clubs don't document or possibly have apply differently.  However adopting these customs consistently when playing at SWCC, in friendly or competitive games, will result in a more enjoyable experience.

  1. When double banking do not start your game if the other game is playing around, or to, hoops 1/7, 2/8 or 4/9 as you could quickly get in each others way,

  2. Wait for your opponent's ball to stop moving before playing your stroke, and don't walk forward after your stroke, wait until all the balls in your game have been played forward,

  3.  The player who scores a hoop should immediately, and clearly, speak out the score in the format blue/green score followed by red/pink score, (N.b. not your score then your opponents as some clubs do)

  4. When double banking if your next hoop is occupied by the other game wait for them to complete that hoop and then decide which team should proceed.  This is normally based upon which team has the least obstructions (i.e. balls) in their way that would require them to be marked,

  5. Always be aware where all the other players (1, 3 or 7) are on the lawn and where they are about to play towards and DON'T STAND IN THEIR WAY and be careful that your shadow does not fall across the ball or the player about to make a stroke,

  6. Finally, be aware that unnecessary talking can distract other players and don't ever talk when someone is about to play a stroke.
